IEP, IDEA, AT…Wait, What’s AT?

IEP, IDEA, AT… Wait, What's AT?

AT can also be referred to as Assistive Technology.

IDEA states Assistive Technology is:

“Any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities.”

Assistive Technology can range from low-tech to high-tech.

There are a lot of tools out there, but it all comes down to what works best for your child.

It can be overwhelming trying to figure out where to start or where to go next.

  • Should we try an app or an extension?

  • Should we use a Chromebook or an iPad?

  • What kinds of tools could help my child?

  • How do we access the supports?

  • What should we do if something is not working?

  • How will my child know when to use the tools?

If any of these questions have come across your mind, know that you are not alone and I am here to support you and your child.

Don’t forget…

IDEA states: The IEP Team must consider whether the child needs assistive technology devices and services.
